Digging Into Fort Martin Scott: History, Archaeology, and the Future of the Fort at Riverside Nature Center

The Hill Country Archeological Association will welcome Shannon Smith, site manager of Fort Martin Scott State Historic Site in Fredericksburg, for a presentation exploring the history and archaeology of this important Texas site. Smith’s work brings together archaeology, public history, preservation, and interpretation to create engaging experiences that connect visitors with the past.

The presentation will examine Fort Martin Scott’s history, the changing landscape around the site, and its development as a U.S. Army frontier post and later uses. Smith will also discuss archaeological investigations conducted at the fort, discoveries made through those efforts, unanswered questions, and how future research could support preservation, interpretation, and potential reconstruction.

The HCAA general meeting takes place Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 12:30 pm at Riverside Nature Center, 150 Francisco Lemos Street, Kerrville, TX 78028. Doors open at 12:30 pm, followed by a brief member meeting at 1 pm and the presentation. The event is free and open to the public.
